Austria's new fuel price tracker exposes hidden savings for drivers
Austria’s Federal Competition Authority (BWB) has launched a weekly fuel price tracker to improve transparency in domestic gasoline and diesel costs. The tool aims to help consumers find the best deals while increasing competition among fuel stations across the country. The new tracker reveals that filling up just before midday often results in the lowest prices. It also highlights how smaller, independent fuel stations frequently undercut larger competitors, encouraging market competition.
BWB Director Natalie Harsdorf warned that a proposed fuel price cap could place financial strain on smaller operators. She also noted that monitoring whether VAT reductions are passed on to consumers would be a complex and temporary task. Industry insiders have raised concerns that the BWB’s role could expand into broader market intervention. Harsdorf cautioned that such measures might ultimately push prices higher in the long term. Last year, the BWB took strong enforcement action, imposing nearly €82 million in fines. The authority also carried out 15 dawn raids and received 172 whistleblower reports. However, no draft legislation to strengthen competition enforcement has been introduced yet.
The fuel price tracker is now available to the public, offering clearer insights into pricing trends. While the BWB continues to monitor market behaviour, the long-term effects of potential interventions remain uncertain. The authority’s focus stays on balancing transparency with fair competition in the fuel sector.
