Magadan College May Honor Mining Legend Vladimir Khristov
A campaign has begun to rename the Magadan Polytechnic College in honour of Vladimir Kirillovich Khristov, a key figure in Russia’s mining sector. The proposal, backed by local mining firms and the regional Mining Council, invites public feedback before any formal steps are taken. Vladimir Kirillovich Khristov (1949–2020) was a respected miner and longtime leader of Susumanzoloto, one of Kolyma’s major gold producers. His career focused on training specialists for the region’s mining industry, earning him titles like Honored Miner and Honorary Citizen of Magadan Oblast.
Local mining companies recently called on the regional government to support the renaming initiative. The Mining Council, led by Anatoly Shirokov, Speaker of the Magadan Regional Duma, is now collecting opinions from residents. Feedback can be submitted via the Duma’s official website under the 'Mining Council' section. If the proposal gains broad public backing, organisers will draft an appeal to the Governor of Magadan Oblast. The college’s role in educating skilled miners has been vital to Kolyma’s gold production, making the tribute particularly fitting.
The final decision rests on public support and the Governor’s approval. If successful, the Magadan Polytechnic College will carry Khristov’s name, recognising his lasting impact on the region’s mining education and industry.
