Moment Energy Earns Key Safety Certification for Repurposed EV Batteries

Moment Energy has secured a key safety certification for its battery management system (BMS), designed specifically for repurposed electric vehicle (EV) batteries. The UL 60730-1 functional safety approval addresses critical concerns around second-life battery use in commercial and industrial applications. This latest milestone completes the company’s full suite of UL safety certifications for energy storage systems. The newly obtained UL 60730-1 certification focuses on the safety of Moment Energy’s proprietary BMS, which is engineered to manage repurposed battery cells while protecting automotive partners' intellectual property. It also establishes a certified safety framework for the company’s AI and machine-learning optimisation features. These capabilities help enhance performance and reliability in stationary storage applications.

Moment Energy already held UL 1974, UL 1973, and UL 9540 certifications, covering battery repurposing, stationary energy storage, and fire safety. The addition of UL 60730-1 now ensures full safety compliance at the BMS control level. This comprehensive certification stack aims to build trust among customers, battery manufacturers, automakers, utilities, and regulators when deploying second-life EV batteries in essential infrastructure.

The company’s systems are currently operational in data centres, hospitals, factories, and microgrids across North America. Manufacturing takes place in Texas and British Columbia, supporting both regional and cross-border energy storage projects. With UL 60730-1 certification in place, Moment Energy’s BMS now meets rigorous safety standards for repurposed battery applications. The achievement removes a major barrier for wider adoption of second-life EV batteries in critical sectors. Customers and industry partners can now deploy these systems with greater assurance of performance and compliance.
