A Piece of Freiburg's History Gets a Future-Proof Upgrade: Knopfhäusle Renovation Nears Next Milestone

On Friday, March 27, 2026, Freiburg's municipal property company, Stadtimmobilien Freiburg GmbH, presented the latest progress during a site inspection. According to the update, the third phase of construction—focused on the so-called Meisterhäuser (master craftsmen's homes)—is nearing completion. Work on the fourth and final phase is expected to continue until the end of 2026. Some of the first renovated homes have already been reoccupied since 2022 and 2023.

Located in the eastern part of the city, the Knopfhäusle settlement is considered one of Freiburg's most significant historic neighborhoods. Built in the 19th century to house workers from a local button factory, the district has left a lasting mark on the city's architectural identity, according to municipal officials.

The renovation project aims to reconcile heritage conservation, climate protection, and affordable housing. The city reports that roofs, façades, and building services have been comprehensively modernized while preserving historical features. Energy consumption has been cut by roughly 45 percent as a result.

Once complete, the project will deliver around 100 upgraded apartments. A specialized rental model will ensure that rents remain well below Freiburg's average market rates. Efforts have also been made to maintain existing neighborhood ties, including offering former residents the chance to return.

The initiative has garnered attention beyond the region and, according to the city, received a national funding award in 2025.
