Wolfsburg's Westhagen district to get a new shopping centre by 2024

A new shopping centre is set to arrive in Wolfsburg’s Westhagen district. The City Council will vote on the Westhagen III development plan on June 17, 2023. If approved, the project will bring fresh retail options and improved public spaces to the area. The proposed shopping centre will sit at the heart of Westhagen, covering around 3,900 square meters of floor space. Inside, two large grocery stores and three smaller retail units will offer roughly 2,900 square meters of sales area. Outside, the plan includes about 100 parking spots and changes along Dessauer Straße.

The development plan also sets rules for the building’s appearance. This includes façade design, roofing, advertising signs, and green roofs. Noise and retail impact studies have already been completed to assess the project’s effects.

According to Lord Mayor Dennis Weilmann, the centre will secure long-term local supplies and boost the district’s future. The council’s decision will trigger a one-month public review of the draft plan. The aim is to improve Westhagen’s centre while keeping its existing character intact. The Westhagen III plan covers Dessauer Straße South and the shopping centre area, including its first amendment. Once approved, the project will move forward with detailed design and construction phases. Residents will have a month to review the draft before final steps are taken.
