Turkey-South Korea Partnership Marks 70 Years of Cooperation

Turkey and South Korea's diplomatic relations, now over a century old, have evolved into a multifaceted partnership. From military cooperation during the Korean War to cultural exchanges and strategic language initiatives, their bond continues to strengthen.

The journey began in 1950 when Turkey sent over 21,000 troops to support South Korea, becoming the fourth-largest contributor to the UN forces. This military cooperation laid the foundation for a deep historical relationship. Today, their ties extend beyond defense to trade, investment, and cultural exchange.

In 2020, South Korea's Ministry of Education launched the 'Learn a Strategic Foreign Language' initiative. Initially focusing on Turkish, it now includes languages like Persian and Ukrainian. The program aims to enhance linguistic diversity and prepare South Koreans for global roles. The interest in learning Turkish has grown significantly over the past five years, with registrations rising from 627 in the first year to over 6,300 by 2025.

Diplomatic milestones include commemorations of anniversaries and national celebrations attended by ambassadors. These events reflect the ongoing engagement and cooperation between the two nations. President Lee Jae Myung, elected in 2025, reaffirmed the historic bond established during the Korean War and committed to continued bilateral development.

The U.N. Memorial Cemetery in Busan stands as a testament to Turkey's role in the Korean War, with 462 Turkish servicemen resting there. Today, Turkey and South Korea's relationship spans political, economic, and cultural dimensions. With growing interest in learning Turkish and expanding cooperation, their partnership continues to evolve and strengthen.
