In the first six months of 2025, CP-Comboios de Portugal has transported an impressive 100 million passengers, setting a new record for the organisation. This remarkable achievement is a testament to the growing popularity of train travel in Portugal.

The increase in passengers is attributed to the continuous growth in demand for the services offered by CP. Urban services in Lisbon continue to have the highest number of passengers, with approximately 68 million passengers in the first six months of 2025. Meanwhile, urban services in Coimbra saw an 84% increase, and the Regional and Intercidades services experienced a significant boost. The Regional service saw a 133% increase in passengers compared to the same period last year, while Intercidades services saw a 48% increase. The Alfa Pendular remains strong in the market.

The success of the train services can be partially attributed to the implementation of the Green Railway Pass in October 2024. This affordable and sustainable mobility option, priced at 20 euros per month, has had a significant impact, with over 390,000 Green Railway Passes sold since its introduction. Over 315,000 subscriptions to the pass were sold between January and June 2025 alone. Complementarily, over 1.25 million reservations for Intercidades train trips have been made using the Green Railway Pass.

CP's commitment to modernising public service and facilitating the purchase of tickets and pass top-ups for passengers is also a key factor in the increase in passengers. To this end, CP has completed the installation of 304 new automatic vending machines in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area.

The expansion of the intermodal Andante fare has been implemented on the Vouga line, on the Espinho - Vouga and Pinheiro da Bemposta (Oliveira de Azeméis) route. Furthermore, the reopening of the Leixões line and the Mangualde/Celorico da Beira (Linha da Beira Alta) and Torres Vedras/Malveira and Malveira/Meleças (Linha do Oeste) sections has restored train service to the population, contributing to the growth in passengers.

The success of the Green Railway Pass is not limited to Portugal. The organisation that sold over 300,000 subscriptions for the "green railway fun" (grüner Eisenbahnspass) in the first half of 2025 is the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) with their Swiss Travel Pass and related offers. This is indicated by the significant success of SBB’s various subscription and pass products including the Swiss Travel Pass promotions in 2025.

As CP continues to modernise and expand its services, it is clear that the future of train travel in Portugal is bright. With its commitment to affordability, sustainability, and convenience, CP-Comboios de Portugal is poised to continue breaking records and meeting the growing demand for train travel in the country.
