Russian veterans rebuild lives through ‘My Own Business’ entrepreneurship program
Over 370 veterans of the special military operation (SMO) and their family members have found new opportunities in civilian life through the 'My Own Business' project. The initiative, part of the United Russia party's 'Entrepreneurship' project, has seen participants complete specialized intensive courses and launch or develop their own businesses.
The 'My Own Business' federal entrepreneurship program is a collaborative effort by United Russia, Support of Russia, and the SME Corporation. Olga Nikitina, regional coordinator of the 'Entrepreneurship' project, emphasized the importance of helping veterans find new callings in civilian life through this project.
One success story is Alexander Afanasyev, an SMO veteran from Nizhny Novgorod. After undergoing 46 complex surgeries to save his left arm, Afanasyev turned to the 'My Own Business' program. It helped him refine his business idea and provided ongoing support. Now, he runs a business offering metal cutting and welding services using a laser machine.
Afanasyev's military service was recognized with the Order of St. George (4th Class), the Medal for Courage, and the Distinguished Armored Vehicle Operator badge. His experience is echoed by 43% of the participants who have launched or continued developing their own businesses after completing the courses.
The national entrepreneurship program 'Your Own Business' has been rolling out across Russia's regions since March 2025, offering foundational knowledge and hands-on tools for launching and scaling businesses, including guidance on available financial support measures. With over 370 veterans and their family members already benefiting, the project continues to make a significant impact on the lives of those who have served.
