Ransomware attacks surge as cybersecurity threats evolve in 2024
Cybersecurity experts have released a report highlighting the growing threat of ransomware attacks. The study, based on data from 600,000 endpoints, reveals alarming trends and predictions for the coming year.
In 2023, ransomware attacks disproportionately targeted the IT and construction sectors, making up nearly half of all incidents. This trend is concerning, as it affects critical infrastructure and businesses that rely heavily on technology.
IoT security has emerged as a major concern. Connected devices, if not properly secured, can be exploited for malicious purposes, widening the attack surface. Meanwhile, QR phishing, or 'Quishing,' is on the rise, threatening organizations across various industries.
The 8Base ransomware group has been particularly active, focusing on small- and medium-sized businesses. Ransomware tactics are evolving, with groups like Hunters International, Akira, Cl0p, Qilin, PLAY, and Lynx employing sophisticated strategies, including double extortion.
LockBit was identified as the most active ransomware group, using a 'name and shame' tactic to pressure victims into paying ransoms.
Looking ahead to 2024, experts warn of significant challenges. AI exploitation, IoT vulnerabilities, evolving ransomware operations, hacktivism, and hack-for-hire services are expected to pose substantial threats. Businesses and individuals must remain vigilant, invest in robust cybersecurity measures, and stay informed about emerging threats.
