IUCN and Veracel Partner to Boost Biodiversity in Brazil’s Atlantic Forest
IUCN and Veracel have joined forces to develop a Nature Roadmap. This two-year collaboration aims to explore the potential of eucalyptus plantations in promoting measurable Nature Positive outcomes in Brazil's Atlantic Forest.
The Nature Roadmap will delve into how well-managed eucalyptus plantations can contribute to Brazil's National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. IUCN, through its Business and Nature Unit, will provide Veracel with tools and methodologies, including the IUCN RHINO approach and the STAR metric, to enhance sustainable business practices and decision-making.
Veracel, a Brazilian company established in 1991, is committed to the sustainable production of eucalyptus-based pulp. It is a joint venture between Stora Enso and Suzano. Luis Henrique Tapia, Veracel's Director of Sustainability and Corporate Affairs, underscored the significance of this collaboration for Veracel's dedication to biodiversity conservation, climate resilience, and sustainable community development. Martin Sneary, IUCN's Business and Nature Unit Director, expressed delight in collaborating with Veracel to further explore the IUCN RHINO approach. Gabriel Quijandría, IUCN South America's Regional Director, highlighted the UN's recognition of the Atlantic Forest's restoration as a global model and Veracel's leadership in building a sustainable forestry model for the ecosystem.
The collaboration between IUCN and Veracel seeks to provide scientific evidence of a net positive impact on biodiversity. Through knowledge sharing and the development of a roadmap, Veracel's nature strategy will be strengthened, contributing to Brazil's National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan and the global biodiversity framework.
