Institutional Bitcoin ETF holdings drop 3.5% as caution grips the market

Institutional holdings of Bitcoin ETFs fell in the last quarter of 2025, marking a shift in market behaviour. Despite the decline, large investors still controlled a significant share of the assets. The overall trend suggests cautious sentiment as Bitcoin's price hovered around $68,000.

The total amount of Bitcoin held by institutions in U.S. spot ETFs dropped by 19,000 BTC in Q4 2025. This reduction represented a 3.5% decline in their overall holdings. Yet, the institutional share of the ETF market remained stable, slipping just 1% compared to the previous quarter.

The number of firms holding these ETFs also fell by 14%. However, 17 of the top 25 institutional investors actually increased their exposure during the same period. By the end of Q4, institutions still held over 513,000 BTC, despite the pullback.

Retail investors continued to dominate the market, owning more than 700,000 BTC in these ETFs. With Bitcoin trading at $68,000, the average ETF holder faced losses of about 20% on their investment.

The decline in institutional Bitcoin ETF holdings raises questions about future trends. Market watchers will be observing whether large investors maintain their positions during the ongoing crypto winter in early 2026. For now, retail investors still hold the largest share of U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs.
