ICODOS Transforms Wastewater into Climate-Neutral Methanol

ICODOS, a startup founded in 2020 as a spin-off of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), is making waves in the wastewater treatment industry. The company plans to expand its innovative technology across Europe, potentially transforming wastewater into a key energy source. In Mannheim, ICODOS has begun a groundbreaking project to produce climate-neutral methanol from wastewater.

The ICODOS technology involves a three-stage process. First, it separates CO2 from wastewater. Then, it reacts the captured CO2 with green hydrogen. Finally, it purifies the resulting methanol. This process not only treats wastewater but also reduces CO2 emissions. In Mannheim, biogas from wastewater is already being converted into methanol using this method, demonstrating the technology's practicality.

ICODOS' work is significant because shipping alone accounts for about three percent of global greenhouse gas emissions. Methanol, a central raw material for shipping, aviation, and the chemical industry, can replace fossil fuels as a Renewable Fuel of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO). By providing a sustainable fuel source, ICODOS aims to revolutionize these industries and contribute to a greener future.

ICODOS' expansion plans and innovative wastewater-to-methanol technology show great promise in reducing emissions and providing a sustainable fuel source. As the project progresses, it will be interesting to see how this technology impacts the shipping, aviation, and chemical industries. Further information about ICODOS' partners and future plans can be obtained by contacting the company directly.
