Bundeswehr in Lithuania - Haseloff: More Than a Symbol - Germany Bolsters Lithuania's Security with 4,800-Strong Brigade

Minister President Reiner Haseloff has reiterated Germany's commitment to Lithuania's security, stressing the significance of the German Armed Forces' presence in the country. This comes as the 45th Panzer Brigade, established to counter growing threats from Russia, is currently based in Vilnius, with around 400 soldiers already on site.

The brigade, which is set to reach full strength of around 4,800 soldiers over the next two years, is currently accommodated in a large office complex in Vilnius. Its future main headquarters, a barracks complex with a training area in Rudninkai, is under construction. Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz has emphasized the importance of the brigade, stating that 'the protection of Vilnius is the protection of Berlin'.

Lithuania provides essential military infrastructure, including barracks, accommodations, training opportunities, and storage capacities for the German Armed Forces. The Baltic states, including Lithuania, are pushing for a faster buildup of German forces in Europe, viewing Germany as a crucial security partner. Haseloff, during his visit, explored cooperation with Lithuania and Latvia in the development of drones to enhance resilience and defense capabilities.

The expansion of the German Bundeswehr's presence in Lithuania is underway, with plans to increase the battle-ready brigade to full strength and prepare for permanent stationing. While specific details about new military facilities are not yet available, the commitment to Lithuania's security is clear, with Haseloff stating that the presence of German Armed Forces is not just symbolic but significantly contributes to Lithuania's security.
