DFKI Leads €9.15M PROTECT Project to Fortify IT Security

The German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) is leading the PROTECT project, a €9.15 million initiative funded by Germany’s Cyber Agency. Aiming to bolster cybersecurity for businesses and public institutions, the project is set to run from December 20, 2024, to December 19, 2028.

PROTECT is tackling the rising global threat of cyber attacks on businesses and institutions. It takes a bottom-up approach, combining formal methods and tools to integrate into existing IT architectures without disrupting operations.

The project is building a reference system using a RISC-V processor. This allows for highly flexible and customizable hardware solutions, setting new benchmarks for cyber secure systems. Partners in this endeavor include RWTH Aachen University and Cryspen SARL, along with numerous universities and environmental and governmental bodies across Austria, Italy, Germany, and Slovenia.

With all tools and methods developed in PROTECT to be released as open-source software, the project aims to make IT systems more resilient against cyber threats. Led by DFKI’s Cyber-Physical Systems research division, PROTECT is poised to significantly improve IT security for a wide range of organizations.
