Berlin's 'Konnekt' Project Marks Major Milestone in Sustainable Urban Development
On October 20, 2025, Berlin marked a significant milestone with the groundbreaking of 'Konnekt', one of the city's largest new urban development projects in the Marzahn district. This mixed-use quarter will transform the former Georg Knorr Park into a vibrant, sustainable community with a focus on reducing car dependency.
The 'Konnekt' project, a joint development by LABORGH Investment GmbH, Kondor Wessels, and the city-owned housing association HOWOGE, will feature around 1,600 apartments spread across approximately 107,000 square meters of living space. Additionally, it will include about 22,000 square meters of commercial space, catering to the needs of both residents and visitors.
The quarter will boast ample bicycle parking, green inner courtyards, and a shared underground garage to encourage sustainable transportation. It will also incorporate social infrastructure, such as a daycare center, a youth leisure facility, and a community hub, along with funding for 138 primary school places in the surrounding area.
The project aims to preserve the area's industrial heritage. The original red-brick buildings will be retained and integrated into the new layout, defining the quarter's character alongside modern design elements. Furthermore, 'Konnekt' is designed to operate with near-zero CO₂ emissions, featuring rooftop solar panels, heat pumps, and a self-sufficient renewable heating system.
The 'Konnekt' quarter is set to become a beacon of sustainable urban development in Berlin. With its focus on reducing car dependency, preserving industrial heritage, and promoting community engagement, it promises to be a significant contribution to the city's housing offensive.
