Berlin's First 'Open Library' Set to Open in Summer 2026
A new cultural and educational hub is set to open in Berlin's Wasserstadt Oberhavel district. The Hakenfelde branch library, part of a larger residential development by WBM, is nearing completion. The modern facility will serve as a pioneering 'Open News', offering extended access hours. The library, designed by architect Anna Heringer, is integrated into a new WBM residential quarter featuring 238 rental apartments. It is set to open in summer 2026. The project is supported by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) program 'KUBIST – Culture and Libraries in the Neighborhood'. The library will feature cutting-edge digital infrastructure, including makerspaces for hands-on creativity. It is designed as an open space for education, community, and culture. WBM Managing Director Lars Dormeyer recently handed over the keys to the new library to Spandau District Councilor Carola Brückner. The Hakenfelde branch library, located on Rauchstraße, will pioneer Berlin’s first 'Open News' model. Its opening in summer 2026 is eagerly awaited, promising to enrich the neighborhood with a vibrant cultural and educational space.
