Berlin’s Alexanderplatz welcomes its first 21st-century skyscraper with topping-out ceremony

A topping-out ceremony has marked a key moment in the construction of The Berlinian, a new skyscraper rising at Berlin’s Alexanderplatz. The 146-metre-tall building, developed by Commerz Real, is set to become the first 21st-century high-rise at the iconic square. Hundreds of guests, including city officials and project leaders, gathered to celebrate the milestone last week.

The event drew prominent figures, from architect Jan Kleihues to Berlin’s Governing Mayor Kai Wegner. Wegner used the occasion to push for more high-rises in the capital, calling for a ‘true skyline’ that reflects Berlin’s status. He also commended Commerz Real for rescuing the project after the collapse of its previous owner, the now-insolvent Signa Group.

Andreas Rauch, head of development at Commerz Real, highlighted the challenges of securing the site. With the structure now topped out, the focus shifts to interior work. Up to 500 workers will soon be on-site daily to fit out offices, dining areas, and cultural spaces—though no residential units are planned. Next door, another high-rise is already taking shape. French developer Covivio has begun work on its own tower, signalling a wave of new construction at Alexanderplatz.

Completion of The Berlinian is scheduled for May 2027. The building will add modern office and public spaces to the city centre. Its progress also reflects broader ambitions to reshape Berlin’s skyline with new high-rise developments.
