Ancient Crusader Sword Discovered in Mediterranean Sea by Israeli Diver After 900 Years
In a thrilling discovery, a 900-year-old sword has been unearthed off the Carmel coast of Israel. The sword, believed to have been used during the Crusades, was found underwater by diver Shlomi Katzin.
The Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) has confirmed the discovery, with the sword suspected to have belonged to a Christian Crusader, not a Muslim defender. The research team at the IAA points out that the sword's typical European design and manufacturing technique associated with Crusader weaponry support this theory.
The sword, incredibly heavy due to stones glued to it and its large iron size, is four feet long. Experts estimate that it dates back to the Third Crusade, led by King Philip Augustus of France, King Richard I of England (Richard the Lionheart), and the Holy Roman emperor, Frederick I (Frederick Barbarossa), which lasted from 1187 to 1192.
The IAA has already discovered a number of items in the area, some dating back 4,000 years. They plan to study the area where the sword was found, as they suspect it once acted as a shelter for ships and left artifacts in their wake. The area off the Carmel coast may still reveal more artifacts, as shifting sands could uncover hidden treasures.
The discovery of the beautiful sword is seen as an especially exciting find by experts. It is the first time a sword like this has been found. The IAA plans to continue studying and cleaning the sword with the goal of placing it in a museum.
The sword is remarkably intact, having been preserved in good condition due to being underwater. Katzin swam about 500 feet from shore and dove to a depth of around 16 feet to find the historic relic. Upon discovering the sword, Katzin turned it over to the IAA as required by Israeli law.
With further discoveries expected, the IAA has not yet explored the area in full. The IAA is hopeful that this discovery is just the beginning of uncovering the rich history hidden beneath the waves off the Carmel coast of Israel.
