Alt-Tegel’s bold art mural kicks off Berlin’s most ambitious street revival
Alt-Tegel's shopping strip is getting a facelift. The first step, a bold tape-art mural, has transformed the entrance to the pedestrian zone. This is just the beginning of a broader plan to blend commerce, dining, and public space, while celebrating the area's waterfront charm.
The mural, depicting a wave, symbolizes Alt-Tegel's connection to water. It's a striking welcome to the zone, which will soon see more upgrades. Outdated planters will be removed, wooden benches refurbished, and new plant containers and lighting installed. These changes follow a feasibility study by Berlin-based firm LOKATION:S, which recommended reimagining public squares, improving accessibility, and boosting cycling tourism.
The former Leiser department store on Berliner Straße is set to reopen in spring 2026 with new tenants, including Burgermeister and Mago. This addition will further enhance the shopping strip's appeal. District Councilor Korinna Stephan is driving these changes, aiming to make Alt-Tegel 'Berlin’s most beautiful street'. The renewal differs from neighboring developments, emphasizing Alt-Tegel's organic charm and waterfront location.
Alt-Tegel's revival is part of a larger urban transformation. With the nearby Gorki Straße having undergone a €250 million modernization by HGHI Holding GmbH, the area is seeing significant investment. The tape-art mural is just the start of Alt-Tegel's journey to becoming a cohesive, inviting space for retail, gastronomy, and public use.
