Price Soars 652-Fold in Fierce Bidding War for Abandoned Belarusian Home

Auctions for vacant and derelict houses continue in Minsk Region, with one such property sold yesterday on the BUTB-Property platform. The starting price was modest—just one base unit, or 45 rubles. But as bidders battled for ownership, the final sum skyrocketed to 652 times the original value, reports Onlainer.

The dilapidated wooden house, located in the village of Krupka in Pukhavichy District, is far from picturesque: overgrown grounds, a sagging roof, and faded walls. Its surroundings offer little appeal—no lakes, forests, or even a modest stream nearby. Just the hum of a nearby highway and sunlit fields stretching into the distance.

Yet despite its unremarkable condition, the auction drew unprecedented interest. A record 21 participants registered—more than ever before—and in a short span of time, they placed 13,014 bids, the highest number this year. The opening price of 45 rubles ultimately surged to 29,326 rubles (about $9,000 at the current exchange rate).

According to BUTB-Property, abandoned homes have never before sold for such sums. So what sparked this frenzy? The question may be philosophical, but a few factors stand out:

  • The property has hidden advantages: a 25-hundred-square-meter plot, prime logistics (just 300 meters from the M5 highway), and proximity to the capital—only 45 kilometers from Minsk. The auction's winner, in fact, lives in the city. Add to that the growing demand for rural real estate, and competition intensifies.
