1715 Treasure Fleet: $1M in Coins Recovered Off Florida Coast
In a thrilling discovery, a team of salvors has recovered a significant portion of the legendary '1715 Treasure Fleet', off the coast of Florida. The fleet, which sank in 1715, was carrying a fortune of $400 million in gold, silver, and jewelry. The recent find, valued at $1 million, is just a fraction of the total treasure believed to still be out there.
The discovery was made by Capt. Levin Shavers and the crew of the M/V Just Right, led by the captain's son, Mel Fisher Jr. They extracted 1,051 silver reales and five gold escudos from the wreckage. Remarkably, many of the coins are so well-preserved that their original dates and mint marks are still visible. These coins were minted in Mexico, Peru, and Bolivia during the Spanish colonial era.
The wreckage of the fleet is spread out over an area of roughly 50 miles along the Florida coast, making the search for the remaining treasure a painstaking but exciting process. Experts believe there is much more to be found, and the salvors are committed to preserving and studying the artifacts to appreciate their historical significance.
The recent recovery of the '1715 Treasure Fleet' artifacts is a testament to the enduring allure of these historical treasures. With more treasure believed to still be out there, the search continues, promising more exciting discoveries and a deeper understanding of our colonial past.
