Vienna builds a €39 million water pipeline to meet rising demand by 2028
A major new drinking water pipeline is under construction in Vienna's Floridsdorf district. The 5.4-kilometre transmission main will strengthen the city's water supply as its population grows. Work on the €39 million project began in late March 2026 and is set to finish by autumn 2028.
The first phase of construction started on 23 March 2026 at Haspingerplatz, extending along Frauenstiftgasse. Over the following months, crews will lay pipes along Brünner Straße, continuing through to autumn 2027. Despite the scale of the work, at least one lane in each direction will stay open for most of the project.
The new pipeline will run from Haspingerplatz, passing through Frauenstiftgasse and Baumergasse, before following Brünner Straße to the Bisamberg water reservoir. Once complete, it will distribute large volumes of water across Vienna's expanding northern districts. This additional capacity aims to improve supply reliability in areas where demand is rising. The project forms part of a wider effort to secure the city's water network for the future. With urban growth increasing pressure on existing infrastructure, the pipeline will act as a new transport line, boosting capacity without replacing older pipes.
The €39 million scheme is scheduled for completion in autumn 2028. Once operational, the pipeline will help meet the needs of Vienna's growing population. Its 5.4-kilometre route will ensure a more stable water supply for the northern parts of the city.
