OpenAI Foundation pledges $1B to revolutionize disease research and AI safety

The OpenAI Foundation has announced a $1 billion investment plan to speed up disease research and improve AI safety. Led by Sam Altman, the initiative will focus on three key areas: Alzheimer's studies, public health data expansion, and faster treatments for deadly diseases. No independent research institutes or universities have yet publicly partnered with the foundation on these projects.

The foundation's new strategy targets major health challenges using AI. Tools will be developed to track disease progression, uncover biomarkers, and repurpose existing drugs approved by the FDA. A significant portion of the $1 billion fund will support these efforts, alongside building open-access datasets for broader research.

Leadership changes have also been introduced to drive the plan forward. Jacob Trefethen will now head the life sciences program, while Anna Makanju will lead AI initiatives for civil society and philanthropy. Robert Kaiden takes on the role of Chief Financial Officer, and Jeff Arnold will oversee the foundation's operations. Beyond disease research, the foundation is expanding its work on AI resilience and security. This includes studying potential threats from AI systems and exploring safer ways for humans to interact with them. The initiative will also continue funding community groups through the People-First AI Fund, helping societies adapt to AI-driven economic shifts.

The $1 billion plan marks a major push into disease research and AI safety under Altman's leadership. With new leadership in place and a focus on open-access data, the foundation aims to accelerate medical breakthroughs and address AI's broader societal effects. So far, no external research bodies have confirmed collaboration on the projects.
