Nova Scotia Boosts HRM Housing Growth with New Interim Planning Orders
Nova Scotia's Government has introduced new orders to boost housing growth in the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM). The move aims to unlock development while the Regional Plan is being finalised. Municipal Affairs Minister John Lohr has designated HRM as an interim planning area, implementing immediate minimum planning requirements.
The province is collaborating with HRM to create a more practical, resident-focused Regional Plan. The interim planning area order removes barriers for residential development by implementing several minimum planning requirements. Nine suburban growth area opportunity sites have been identified to facilitate future development.
The new orders enable some policies from HRM's Regional Plan for suburban growth. This will help support housing growth in the municipality while work on the Regional Plan continues.
