Mumbai's sanitation workers to get 54 new homes after years of delays
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has secured clearance for a housing project dedicated to sanitation workers. Located at Cochin Street in Fort, the development will provide 54 rehabilitation flats. The initiative follows a lengthy delay due to administrative hurdles and environmental regulations. The project’s foundation-laying ceremony, or bhoomi pujan, took place in October 2024. Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Speaker and Colaba MLA Rahul Narwekar led the event. However, progress stalled for nearly a year as lease formalities with the Mumbai Port Authority remained unresolved.
The site lies within the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ), requiring mandatory environmental approval. On February 2, 2026, the Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority (MCZMA) granted in-principle clearance. Each of the 54 flats will measure 238 sq ft, specifically designed for civic sanitation staff. The estimated cost of the project stands at around Rs. 17 crore. With approvals now in place, construction can move forward after months of administrative and regulatory delays.
The housing project will provide much-needed accommodation for sanitation workers in a high-demand area. Following the MCZMA’s approval, the BMC can now proceed with construction. The flats are expected to improve living conditions for civic staff once completed.
