Mumbai's iconic 'Van Rani' toy train returns with a green twist after cyclone hiatus
Mumbai's beloved 'Van Rani' Toy Train has returned after a lengthy shutdown caused by Cyclone Tauktae in 2021. The revived service, now modernised and eco-friendly, was officially relaunched by Union Minister Piyush Goyal at Sanjay Gandhi National Park. Known as the 'Queen of the Jungle,' the train has been a cherished part of the city's heritage since the 1970s.
The newly reintroduced Van Rani train operates on a battery-powered engine, replacing its older system with a greener alternative. Its route winds through 5.5 square kilometres of Krishnagiri Upvan, passing biodiversity hotspots, a mini zoo and artificial tunnels. The train can carry up to 80 passengers, offering rides in both Heritage and Vista Dome coaches. One of the coaches features a panoramic Vista Dome design, giving travellers unobstructed views of the surrounding landscape.
A newly built loco shed near Krishnagiri Station will house and maintain the toy trains, ensuring smooth operations. The station itself has been redesigned with nature in mind, shaped like a butterfly to symbolise transformation. Inside, visitors will find a waiting room, ticket counters, accessible ramps for differently-abled guests and staff facilities. The revival of the Van Rani aligns with broader efforts to boost eco-tourism in the region. Its upgraded features—modern coaches, enhanced safety and nature-themed aesthetics—position it as a model for sustainable recreation. The train's educational value also aims to raise awareness about local wildlife and conservation.
The relaunch marks a new chapter for the iconic toy train, blending heritage with modern sustainability. With its scenic route, eco-friendly design and improved infrastructure, the Van Rani is set to attract visitors while supporting green tourism. The service is now open to the public at Sanjay Gandhi National Park.
