Moscow's iconic Riga Station heads to auction for $44 million redevelopment
Moscow's historic Riga Station is set to go under the hammer after Russian Railways announced its sale. The auction, revealed on 19 February, includes the station building, an adjoining structure, and a 13,000-square-metre land plot. Officials expect the sale to draw fresh ideas for redeveloping the long-dormant site.
The government gave the green light for the auction in February, setting the starting price at market value. The total package—station, outbuilding, and land—carries a price tag of over 4 billion rubles (around $44 million). The station itself spans more than 7,700 square metres, though it has stood empty for years after passenger services ceased.
Anastasia Kotkovskaya, a senior official in RZD's property department, confirmed the sale details. As a protected cultural heritage site, the complex requires a buyer willing to preserve its historic character while introducing new functions. Authorities have emphasised the potential for creative redevelopment, signalling openness to proposals beyond traditional railway use.
The auction presents an opportunity to transform a disused landmark into a modern asset. With its heritage status and central location, the site could take on a new role under private ownership. The winning bidder will need to balance preservation with innovation for the 13,000-square-metre property.
