Mexico auctions off cartel-linked Tapalpa properties after 'El Mencho' death
Mexico’s Institute to Return Stolen Assets to the People (INDEP) is auctioning off 211 properties in Tapalpa, Jalisco. The sale includes a 13,000-square-meter plot linked to the Tapalpa Country Club, where cartel leader Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, alias 'El Mencho', was killed last year. Bidders have until May 28 to submit their offers in a sealed-bid event.
The auction features 75 lots, including 12 commercial spaces, 23 homes, six mixed-use properties, and 34 plots of land. Among them is a large rustic property with a starting price of 12.9 million pesos (around $750,000 USD). The land was transferred by the Federal Treasury and comes with a clear title deed and full legal possession rights.
The Tapalpa Country Club itself is a tourist and residential complex. It includes 43 rustic-style cabins and a grand central courtyard. The site gained notoriety after 'El Mencho' was killed there during a security operation on February 22, 2023. Bids must be submitted by May 28, either in person or through a legal representative. Envelopes will be opened at 12:00 PM, with the process streamed live on INDEP’s official YouTube channel. The institute has stated it will not accept claims or assume liability for how buyers use the properties after purchase.
The auction offers a mix of residential, commercial, and undeveloped land in a high-profile location. All properties are being sold with full legal documentation, ensuring clear ownership for the winning bidders. The results of the sealed-bid event will be announced publicly after the May 28 deadline.
