Film funding awards nearly 1.3 million euros in the North-East - Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Backs Ten Bold Film Projects with €1.24M Funding

The Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Film Fund (MV Filmförderung) has awarded €1.24 million to ten new film projects. The funding supports a mix of feature films, an animated documentary, and a short film, each tied to the region’s unique landscapes and creative voices.

Several of these productions are led by women, reflecting a natural shift in storytelling rather than a deliberate quota. The selected works blend bold artistic visions with settings across the state, including multiple projects based on the island of Rügen.

Among the funded projects is Gittersee, directed by Nina Vuković. This feature film, set in East Germany in 1976, adapts a novel and received €250,000. The story was originally developed by German director and writer Anette S. Heuer, who initiated the project.

Another €250,000 goes to Windstärke 17, directed and written by Mia Maariel Meyer. The film is based on Caroline Wahl’s follow-up novel and marks Meyer’s dual role behind the camera. Meanwhile, Lucas Thiem’s directorial debut, Nobbi im Nebel, secured the highest individual grant of €470,000.

The funding highlights a trend of female-led productions, not as a policy requirement but as an organic part of the region’s filmmaking scene. Many of the stories draw inspiration from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania’s distinct locations, weaving them into fresh narratives.

The €1.24 million investment will bring ten new films to life, each rooted in the region’s culture and landscapes. With a mix of established and emerging talent, the projects promise to showcase both local stories and innovative filmmaking. The first productions are expected to begin filming in the coming months.
