Kamyar Abrar returns to Weil to co-lead Germany's booming private equity practice
Kamyar Abrar has returned to Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP to co-lead its German private equity practice. The move marks a significant shift in the firm's leadership and market presence. Abrar previously held a senior role at Willkie Farr & Gallagher before rejoining Weil in early 2024.
Abrar brings extensive experience in private equity, mergers and acquisitions, and antitrust matters. Before his return, he served as co-managing partner of Willkie Farr & Gallagher's German office. His appointment at Weil has been welcomed by senior figures, including Marco Compagnoni, the firm's global co-head of private equity, who highlighted Abrar's return as a positive development.
At Weil, Abrar will work alongside Sebastian Pauls, co-managing partner of the firm's German offices. Pauls expressed satisfaction with the appointment, noting Abrar's expertise as a valuable asset. Abrar himself has spoken of his enthusiasm for collaborating with Pauls and the wider team.
Since his arrival in early 2024, Weil has seen a notable rise in its German private equity market share. The firm now ranks second in league tables, just behind Clifford Chance, after leading on deals worth over €2.5 billion in 2025. This growth comes as Willkie Farr & Gallagher, Abrar's former firm, dropped to fifth place following key partner departures and a decline in high-profile mandates during 2024-2025.
Weil's private equity practice in Germany has gained momentum under Abrar's leadership. The firm's involvement in major transactions has increased, solidifying its position among the top advisers in the market. His return has coincided with a period of expansion for Weil, while his previous firm faces challenges in maintaining its earlier standing.
