Hamburg Environmental Authority Buys Forest Plot - Hamburg secures Heimfelder Holz Nature Reserve with landmark forest purchase

Hamburg has taken full ownership of the Heimfelder Holz Nature Reserve after buying 43 hectares of forest from a private landowner. The move ensures long-term protection for one of the city's most biodiverse areas. Officials described the acquisition as a major step for conservation and public access.

The newly secured land expands the fully protected reserve to roughly 88 hectares. Designated as a nature reserve in 2021, the area supports a wide range of rare species, including 122 types of beetle classified as strictly protected or endangered. Multiple bat species and birds also rely on the habitat.

The mixed forest plays a vital role in climate protection while preserving old-growth trees and rich biodiversity. By purchasing the land, the city removes ongoing costs linked to strict forestry restrictions. Environmental Senator Katharina Fegebank called the deal 'a win for both people and nature'. Plans are now underway to add new trails, guiding visitors along marked routes through the reserve.

The acquisition guarantees permanent protection for Heimfelder Holz and its endangered wildlife. With public ownership secured, the city can focus on conservation efforts and improved access. The forest will remain a key site for biodiversity and climate resilience in Hamburg.
