Frankfurt's Naxoshalle to Undergo €820K Renovation for Year-Round Cultural Events
Frankfurt's historic Naxoshalle is set for a major renovation to allow year-round performances. The city has allocated around €820,000 for the first phase of upgrades. Currently, the landmark venue operates mostly in summer due to its lack of proper heating.
The project aims to improve technical infrastructure and expand cultural opportunities in the Ostend district.
The renovation will take place in two stages. The first phase focuses on upgrading technical systems for Theater Willy Praml, which uses the hall. A permanent heating system will be installed, replacing outdated blackout fabric and reorganising the foyer. Mobile walls will also be added to the theater box for better heat retention in winter and enhanced fire safety.
The southern aisle will be transformed into a second, smaller performance space with roughly 60 seats. This change will give Productionshaus Naxos more staging options. Additional storage will be created for both the theater and the Bornheim youth centre.
As a protected landmark on the Route of Industrial Heritage, the hall will receive a new informational plaque. The city's support for the venue includes plans to return a 1930s Naxos-Union grinding machine to the foyer, reinforcing its industrial heritage. The Ortsbeirat has already allocated €1,000 for transporting the historic piece.
The overall goal is to establish reliable technical conditions, ensuring the hall can host events throughout the year.
The upgrades will enable Naxoshalle to function as a year-round cultural hub. Theater Willy Praml and other local groups will benefit from improved facilities and expanded performance spaces. The project also preserves the site's industrial history while meeting modern operational needs.
