Estonian MPs push for Turba-Haapsalu-Rohuküla railway as national priority
A cross-party group of Estonian MPs has urged the government to classify the Turba-Haapsalu-Rohuküla railway as a nationally significant project. The move would unlock EU funding and ensure the line's completion. Supporters argue the railway will boost regional travel, tourism, and local economies.
The push for the railway's designation follows a February request from the Läänemaa Foundation to the Ministry of Climate. Both efforts highlight the line's potential to connect Tallinn, Lääne County, and Hiiumaa, reducing reliance on private cars for work and education.
Work on the project has already started, with permits secured. However, delays risk their expiry, threatening progress. The group's letter to the government stresses the need for state co-financing and project readiness before the next EU funding cycle begins.
The Riisipere-Turba section, reopened in 2019, has already shown benefits. It now carries nearly 120,000 extra train trips annually, cutting travel times and supporting local business growth. Supporters believe the extended line will further strengthen regional cohesion, sustainable transport, and year-round tourism.
The Ministry of Climate has responded cautiously. It states that detailed plans, including land purchases, will only be addressed once broader reforms are finalised—expected by early 2027.
If approved, the railway could transform travel in western Estonia. It would provide faster, greener links between key areas and encourage families to stay in the region. The next steps depend on government action and securing EU funds before deadlines pass.
