Emmen's Meierhöfli School breaks ground on major expansion to relieve overcrowding

Construction on the Meierhöfli School expansion in Emmen officially began on March 9, 2026. The project aims to ease overcrowding by adding new classrooms and sports facilities to the existing campus.

The current school building was originally designed for 12 classes but now hosts up to 17. To address the growing demand, a new two-storey extension will be built. The lower level will feature a modern double gymnasium, while the upper floor will house six additional primary school classrooms.

The existing single gymnasium will be converted into a cultural hall, available for both school activities and community events. During the first phase of construction, access to the site will be via Seetalstrasse, Meierhöflistrasse, and Fichtenstrasse. The area will be fully fenced off, with safety barriers, clear signage, and designated pedestrian routes in place.

Parking along Fichtenstrasse will be temporarily reduced, though around 20 new public spaces will be created at the rear of the campus. Authorities have also requested that parents avoid using 'parent taxis' to minimise traffic congestion near the school.

The entire expansion is scheduled for completion by 2028.

Once finished, the project will provide much-needed classroom space and improved sports facilities. The repurposed cultural hall will also offer a new venue for local events. Work is now underway, with safety measures and parking adjustments in effect.
