Elon Musk Unveils Terafab and Bold Plans for Mars Colonization

The announcement also included timelines for lunar and Martian cities, along with long-term goals for interstellar travel. Terafab will focus on producing microchips at an unprecedented scale—targeting 1 terawatt of capacity per year. Musk described the project as essential for a future galactic civilisation, where advanced computing will be critical. The factory's location in Austin, Texas, is the only confirmed site so far.
In a broader discussion, Musk assessed humanity's current technological level using the Kardashev scale. He noted that civilisation has not yet reached Type 1 status, which would mean harnessing all available energy on Earth. To progress, he argued that humanity must 'tame' the Sun's energy for sustainable space expansion.
SpaceX's plans include establishing a city on Mars within the next five to seven years. A lunar settlement could follow within a decade, with Musk expressing hope for a mass driver—a system to launch materials from the Moon—during his lifetime.
