Demolition Begins on WWII Bunker for 66 Affordable Homes in Hamburg-Ottensen
Demolition has started on a WWII bunker in Hamburg-Ottensen, paving the way for a significant housing project. The development, a joint venture between Richard Ditting GmbH & Co. KG and the city's municipal housing company SAGA, will bring 66 subsidized apartments to the Altona district. This marks a major milestone, fulfilling a political promise made in 2015.
The new building, designed to the Efficiency House 55 standard and supplied with district heating, will feature apartments ranging from 60 to 90 square meters. These will cater to singles, couples, and families, with each unit offering either a balcony, loggia, or rooftop terrace for outdoor space. All apartments will be fully accessible.
The exterior of the building will sport a brick cladding, while the inner courtyard façades will be finished in light colors. The project aims to deliver an architecturally refined addition to the Ottensen neighborhood while addressing the need for affordable housing. The development will also include an underground garage with 22 parking spaces and 148 bicycle parking spots.
The 66 apartments will be income-restricted, with net cold rent set at €7.25 per square meter. The start of construction is a significant step towards providing much-needed affordable housing in the Altona district.
