Britain's Isa millionaires now outpace US lottery winners in wealth growth

The number of Isa millionaires in Britain is rising fast. New figures show more people are building wealth through tax-free savings than by winning the New York lottery or the Texas lottery. Experts predict this trend will continue over the next decade.

In April 2023, there were 5,070 Isa millionaires, up from 4,850 the previous year. Most of them—94%—grew their fortunes using stocks and shares Isas rather than cash savings. Another 2,270 investors were close to joining them, with pots worth between £900,000 and £999,999.

If these near-millionaires and 59,970 others with pots between £500,000 and £999,999 reach the £1 million mark, the total could hit 7,340. HMRC data even suggests there might be 40,000 Isa millionaires within 10 years.

By comparison, the Ohio lottery and the Florida lottery have created over 7,700 millionaires since their launches, adding around 400 new ones each year. But Isa millionaires are set to overtake lottery winners soon.

The latest figures from 2026 confirm that more than 7,000 people have won £1 million or more from lottery games since they began.

Tax-free savings are proving a more reliable path to wealth than lottery wins. With thousands more investors nearing the £1 million threshold, Isa millionaires could soon outnumber those who struck it lucky. The gap between the two groups is expected to widen further in the coming years. Saving money tips can help investors reach their financial goals faster.
