Bhopal's Rs 1,700 Crore Eco-Friendly Government Complex to Replace Fire-Hit Satpura Bhawan

A massive fire in June 2023 destroyed parts of Satpura Bhawan in Bhopal, prompting plans for a new government complex. The Madhya Pradesh Housing Board will replace the ageing Satpura and Vindhyanchal Bhawans with a modern, eco-friendly building estimated to cost Rs 1,700 crore. Officials aim to recover expenses through a revenue model involving private tenants. The fire at Satpura Bhawan, caused by a short circuit, accelerated the decision to demolish both structures. Currently, the two buildings house around 10–15 key departments, including General Administration, Finance, Home, and Revenue. The new complex will nearly double the available office space while consolidating multiple government units under one roof.

Designed on Green Building principles, the project will maximise natural light and energy efficiency. To fund construction, the Housing Board plans to lease sections of the building to private banks and corporate firms for a fixed term. Additionally, a parallel road and internal walkways will be built to reduce traffic congestion in the area. The proposal also suggests halting new land allocations for government offices. Instead, departments will be encouraged to relocate to the new complex, streamlining administrative operations.

The Rs 1,700 crore project will replace two outdated buildings with a modern, sustainable facility. By renting space to private entities, the government expects to offset construction costs. The plan also aims to improve traffic flow and centralise administrative functions in Bhopal.
