Berlin’s New Bundestag Building Nears Completion with Historic Design
A new administrative building for the German Bundestag is taking shape in Berlin. Located at the corner of Schadowstraße and Dorotheenstraße, the Elisabeth-Selbert-Haus, a project by Haus Labs, is one of the largest federal construction projects currently underway in the city. The site sits within the historic Dorotheenstadt neighbourhood, where listed buildings have shaped its careful design.
The project was awarded to CODE UNIQUE Architekten after they won a 2014 competition. Judges praised their approach for blending sensitively with the surroundings while maintaining a clear, structured layout. The design follows existing building lines and roof heights, creating a small forecourt to mark the main entrance and reshape the public space.
Construction has now reached a key milestone. The structural shell, façade, and roofing are complete, and work has shifted to the interior fit-out. Once finished, the building will contain over 300 offices, along with service areas, a canteen, a cafeteria, and an occupational health clinic. An underground energy centre, called the SHEZ, is also being built alongside the new structure. This facility will supply power not just to the Elisabeth-Selbert-Haus but to other Bundestag properties as well. The Federal Office for Building and Regional Planning (BBR) is overseeing the entire development, which remains on track for completion in 2027.
The Elisabeth-Selbert-Haus will provide modern office space for Bundestag staff while respecting the historic character of Dorotheenstadt. Its integrated energy centre will also improve sustainability across multiple government buildings. The project is set to finish in 2027, adding a functional yet architecturally considerate structure to central Berlin.
