Berlin’s abandoned L’Aiglon cinema could become the new House of Jazz

Berlin has acquired the historic L’Aiglon cinema in Wedding as part of its search for a permanent home for the House of Jazz. The city purchased the long-abandoned building in 2023 and now aims to revive it through a partnership with a private investor. The venue’s future, however, remains uncertain despite its potential.

The L’Aiglon cinema once formed part of the Quartier Napoléon, a cultural hub for film, theatre, and music. Built with a 350-seat auditorium, a balcony, and intricate architectural features, it fell into disuse after French troops left Berlin in 1994. The building has stood empty for decades, though its listed status requires the preservation of original elements like wood panelling and vintage cinema equipment.

Berlin’s government has long sought a fixed location for the House of Jazz, an initiative led by musician Till Brönner. The project aims to establish a dedicated space for jazz and improvisational music in the city. With the nearby Schumacher Quarter—developed on the former Tegel Airport site—expected to boost demand for cultural venues, the L’Aiglon’s revival could fill a growing need. Renovation will be necessary before the cinema can host performances again. While officials explore options, no final decision has been made on whether the site will become the House of Jazz.

The city’s purchase of the L’Aiglon marks a step toward securing a cultural landmark in Wedding. If plans move forward, the venue could provide a new home for jazz while preserving its historic character. For now, its future depends on further negotiations and funding.
