Berlin Buys Court Building in Moabit - Berlin Secures Moabit’s Judicial Hub with Landmark Property Purchase

The building on Kirchstraße serves as a central location for legal proceedings in the city. It accommodates around 950 workstations and contains multiple courtrooms for hearings. Both the Tiergarten Court and the Public Prosecutor’s Office operate from this site.

The decision to buy the property was driven by financial considerations. Over a 30-year period, owning the building will cost significantly less than continuing to rent equivalent premises. Public funds previously spent on external rent will now be redirected toward maintaining a state-owned asset.

While the exact government authority behind the purchase and the completion date remain undisclosed, the acquisition marks a shift in how Berlin manages its judicial infrastructure. The move removes uncertainty about the court’s future location beyond 2029.

The purchase guarantees stability for the judicial services based in Moabit. No further rent payments will be made to external landlords, allowing funds to be reinvested directly into the property. The building will continue to support the operations of the Tiergarten District Court, the Administrative Court, and the Public Prosecutor’s Office for years to come.
