Bangladesh proposes auctioning seized cars stuck at port over import violations

The commerce ministry has proposed a solution to the ongoing issue of cars stuck at the port due to import violations. The advisory council committee on economic affairs is currently reviewing the proposal, with finance adviser Salehuddin Ahmed expected to preside over the meeting. The proposal aims to clear approximately 20 to 22 cars, imported in violation of the policy that prohibits five-year-old cars.

If approved, the government will clear the import duty on the cars. However, the government faces potential litigation from importers and scrapping the cars is not considered a viable option. Instead, the commerce ministry proposes to either give the cars to the transport pool or auction them off, with the Ministry of Interior taking over the 22 luxurious cars. Earlier attempts to clear 44 cars, including luxury vehicles imported by former lawmakers, were unsuccessful. The government considers clearing the stuck cars more important than the number of cars involved.
